Managing Performance
Managing the performance upwards of underperforming staff is a skill that all Manager’s should possess. Supported by a Company’s internal Managing Performance procedures and HR, the Manager still needs the skills on how to implement effectively and help that member of staff improve.
A company’s procedures for managing the performance of their staff will be laid out clearly for Managers to follow. They will also receive the support of their HR department. Yet it is surprising how many managers struggle to implement these effectively.
When I say ‘effectively’ my definition would be to improve their staff member’s performance, so that they consistently perform at the standard required for their role.
Common reasons why managers struggle with Managing Performance
Managers are aware of the importance of motivating their staff. Implementing Management Performance procedures doesn’t feel very motivational!
As a result, the hope is that a conversation and wishful thinking will help the member of staff miraculously resolve their own issues.
Not surprisingly, this is rarely successful. If it was, the likelihood is that the member of staff would have resolved the issue themselves before it even became an issue.
So why should a manager implement Management Performance procedures?
- The company is paying a member of staff to deliver a job to a required standard. The employer is not going to request a refund of part of the salary, so it is only fair that the member of staff is requested to achieve the standard required.
- It is unfair on the members of staff who are performing to the required standard, that they are having to ‘carry’ or ‘cover for’ an underperforming colleague.
- The Company needs all staff to perform to the standard required for it to remain a successful business.
Most of all though is the underperforming individual themselves. Nobody want to spend the majority of their working life feeling ‘they are failing’ or being criticised for the quality of their work.
Therefore, we need to support these members of staff and the Company’s Managing Performance Procedures are the tool to help.
